Freddie Dixon, Ph.D. (UDC, Chairperson) is chairperson and professor of Biology in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.  She also serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University Medical School, Washington, D.C. An active researcher, Dr. Dixon received a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture entitled “Influence of  Bradyrhizobium Isolated from Soils Treated with Biosolids Compost on Nitrogen Fixation and Yield of Cowpea”.  She has a collaborative arrangement with the Soybean Research Laboratory at USDA in Beltsville Maryland to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Van Berkum.   Dr. Dixon was funded by NASA (1998-2001) to train high school students to conduct research on the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. For the past eight years, Dr. Dixon has worked with Dr. Richard Calderone, professor and vice chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Georgetown University Medical School.  Her research involves the role of Candida albicans adhesins in pathogenesis. This research has been published in the Journal of Medical Mycology and was selected as one of two outstanding papers of the year (2000).  Drs. Dixon is PI on an NSF grants “Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (STEM) Research and Training Center” (2004-2009) to increase minority participation in STEM disciplines, provide opportunities for students to conduct independent directed research, increase student academic achievement, and improve graduation rates leading to graduate/professional school admissions and employment opportunities in STEM disciplines.
